ISO 14000 - The New ISO 14001 Standard for EMS is published !

Yes ! ISO has published the new version of ISO 14001 in late 2004. The following shows guidelines for modifying old EMS to new EMS in accordance with ISO 14001:2004. (Transition Period is 12-18 months). Clause 4.2 Policy : Policy needs to include compliance with Legal and Other requirements. Also Policy needs to address “Product AND Services”. Policy needs to include commitment to continual improvement & prevention of pollution. It shall be communicated to all persons working for and on behalf of company. Also, the Scope of Policy cannot be larger than than of EMS. Clause 4.3.1 EA : It shall cover “Product AND Services”. Clause 4.3.2 : Legal & Other requirements. A simple shopping list of legal and other requirement is not enough; and you shall address how they apply to the Company. Consideration should include other requirements such as Customer contract. Clause 4.4.2 Training : Training should include all persons working for or on behalf of organization. (e.g. subcontractor) Clause 4.4.3 Communication : You need to define in Manual/Procedure whether to communicate externally about a company's significant EA, and how. Clause 4.5.2 : Evaluation of compliance. You need to show evaluation of compliance with Regulation and OTHER requirements on a regular basis. Clause 4.5.3 : Corrective and Preventive actions. Corrective and preventive actions; and their causes shall be addressed. Clause 4.6 Management Review. A new agenda has been imposed; including recommendation for improvement.
